Merton’s road safety team received a 2012 Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for its Be a Brighter Biker scheme.

Be a Brighter Biker comprises theory and practical sessions covering the law for riders, safety equipment, buying a vehicle, Compulsory Basic Training, passing the DSA motorcycle test, and ongoing ‘post test’ rider training. The course also includes a number of free road safety resources for young riders.

Merton’s road safety team works with Transport for London, the Metropolitan Police and rider training schools to deliver the programme.

Councillor Andrew Judge, cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration, said: “Motorcycle and moped casualties remain a concern for Merton. Serious road injuries and fatalities have risen by 17% since last year.

“Merton’s road safety team have worked hard to reduce the number of casualties through awareness campaigns and training programmes. Well done to them on receiving the award for the Brighter Biker scheme.”

The award was formally presented to Charmaine Jacques, Merton’s senior road safety education officer and Keith Filby, Merton’s travel plan officer by Prince Michael of Kent at the PMIRSA ceremony in London on 11 December.
