More than 1,000 pupils from across Medway took part in a theatre in education production designed to help them make better roadside decisions.
‘Courtroom’, by Tiny Giants, aims to show children aged 7-11 years (KS2) the basics of what happens in a court of law, and all the factors involved in arriving at a sentence. At each show pupils join the production as witnesses and jury members.
The court case explores a road traffic collision involving a young person hit by a car. Key topics covered in the show include considerate parking, pedestrian safety, seatbelts, distractions and taking responsibility for good decision-making.
Cllr Phil Filmer, Medway Council, said: “The students see and hear some of the consequences and dangers that the characters (in the performance) experience, encouraging them to learn by the characters’ mistakes. They learn that by making the right choice they will keep themselves and others safe.”
Mary Golding, headteacher of Hempstead Junior School, said: “Tiny Giants presented an entertaining play while addressing the more serious message of road safety. It made the children stop and think. The children and teachers were all impressed by the performance.”
The production was funded by Medway’s road safety and parking teams.
