Lancashire County Council’s road safety team marked Road Safety Week 2024 (17-23 November) with a series of events and activities.
Sunday 17 November marked the start of #RoadSafetyWeek 2024, which raises awareness of the devastating impact of road crashes, provides support for road victims, and celebrates the incredible people who help families after a crash. The theme for Road Safety Week 2024 was, ‘After the crash, every road victim counts’.
A special RoadPeace Service was held at County Hall on Sunday 17 November to remember people who have sadly died in road traffic collisions (pictured above).
At the event, which marked this year’s World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, family members and road safety partners laid flowers at the RoadPeace memorial stone to pay tribute to their loved ones.
The service was attended by county councillors Rupert Swarbrick and Michael Green, along with Matt Townsend, director of highways and transport. Representatives from the various local authorities, police, fire and ambulance services, along with multi-faith representatives, also attended.
At 09:30 on Wednesday 20 November, the road safety team also completed the Brake5 Challenge. Nine riders set off from County Hall in Preston in sub-zero temperatures to complete a 21-mile cycle ride, to raise money for victims and their families.

The aim was to work together to raise awareness and as much money as possible, as a tribute to the number of lives lost on UK roads each year. In Lancashire on average, over the last five years, 36 people have been killed and 797 have been seriously injured each year on the county’s road network.
The team has arised an impressive £1,421 plus gift aid of £330, making a total of £1,751. There is still time to support this initiative via the campaign JustGiving Fundraising Page.
Finally, an ‘Alive to Drive’ event was help at Burnley College on Thursday 21 November, during which the road safety team and partners delivered pre-driver, young driver and passenger road safety education.

Well done Lancashire for all your efforts during Road Safey Week, some real good work here involving partners working together to raise awareness and remember lives lost.
