Walk to school support for Medway pupils

With the return to school looming, Medway’s road safety team is reassuring parents with information and support to encourage safe and independent travel.

Phil Filmer, Medway Council’s portfolio holder for front line services, says: “It’s understandable that parents have concerns about allowing their children to travel independently to school for the first time.

“We would suggest that you plan the journey with your child a week or so before the school term starts. Take the journey with them to assess potential hazards along the way and work together on finding a safe solution before your child travels independently. Ensuring they are equipped with life skills, gives parents peace of mind.

“Our road safety team is available to provide practical advice, with free leaflets and lots more helpful information on the safer journeys page of the council website.”For parents with slightly younger children, the team also offers support with schemes such as walking buses, park and stride and a newly developed practical skills programme for younger pedestrians.
