‘It’s Your Move’ campaign returns to promote safer choices among young people in Surrey

Surrey RoadSafe has relaunched its It’s Your Move campaign, encouraging young people to make safer choices whenever they travel on Surrey’s roads.

Aimed at 16 to 24-year-olds, the campaign focuses on the everyday decisions that can affect road safety, encouraging young people to recognise risks, look out for their friends and view safe travel as a sign of confidence, independence and respect for others.

The campaign returns as young people across Surrey head back to schools, colleges and universities, with the stark consequences of risky behaviour highlighted by local casualty figures.

Between January 2023 and December 2025, 428 young people aged 16 to 24 were killed or seriously injured on Surrey’s roads – accounting for around one in five of all people killed or seriously injured in the county.

Now in its second year, It’s Your Move has been shaped by feedback from young people and findings from a recent communications survey.

The research found that young people want road safety messages to be authentic, relatable and relevant to their lives, rather than relying on lectures or scare tactics.

Among the issues highlighted by young people were speeding, distraction, passenger pressure, drink and drug driving, and travelling at night.

Over the next two months, Surrey RoadSafe will use social media content, videos, interactive activities and college engagement events to encourage conversations about everyday choices and the potential consequences of getting them wrong.

The campaign will also place a particular focus on night-time travel as the clocks go back and evenings become darker. Messages will cover the risks faced by young people whether they are driving, cycling, walking or travelling as passengers with friends.

The autumn activity will run alongside the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s Operation Spotlight and Operation Insight campaigns, with local enforcement activity in Surrey also supporting the road safety messages.

Surrey RoadSafe is encouraging young people, parents, carers, schools, colleges and community organisations to get involved and help reinforce the campaign’s central message: Your road. Your safety. Your move.
