27 schools took part in the 2013 ‘Walk 2 Count’ challenge in Medway, which aims to provide children with a “fun and easy” way to travel to and from school.
Phoenix Junior Academy in Chatham won the primary school category, with 97.3% of its pupils walking to school during the week. Greenacre Academy in Walderslade topped the secondary school category with 65.2% of pupils walking. St Augustine of Canterbury RC Primary in Rainham was highly commended for achieving a walk to school increase of 21.1% compared with the 2012 challenge.
Louise Prestidge, deputy head at St Augustine’s of Canterbury RC, said: “We were delighted to take part in the ‘Walk 2 Count’ challenge. The children were very excited to hear they were winners.
“We are very proud of their achievements and thank the children and their parents for their continued efforts and commitment to reduce the number of journeys they take to school by car.”
Cllr Phil Filmer, Medway Council’s portfolio holder for front line services, said: “The walk to school challenge is an excellent opportunity for parents, carers and children to enjoy quality time together. We hope this year’s challenge has encouraged staff, children and parents to walk more frequently.”
