More than 1,000 drivers – half under the age of 25 years – have signed up for a free road safety course provided by Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

The Road Smart course has been developed and will be delivered by the TTC Group, on behalf of Avon and Somerset Constabulary. All drivers in the force’s area can attend the free driving awareness sessions over the next 12 months.

Two versions of the course have been developed, one specifically for younger drivers aged 17-24yrs and the other for the over 25s.

Sue Mountstevens, the force’s police and crime commissioner, said: “To hear that more than 1,000 motorists have signed up to the scheme is really promising. It speaks volumes that drivers of all ages are taking personal responsibility to improve their road safety awareness.”

Superintendent Ian Smith said: “Many crashes are caused by human error and one of the key aims of the scheme is to increase drivers’ awareness of the potential hazards to look out for on the roads.

“The sessions are open to motorists of any age but we are particularly keen to encourage young drivers to sign up since around a third of all serious collisions in our area involve this age group.”

Alan Prosser, TTC Group director, said: “This innovative course is an excellent example of how we can educate people to be safer drivers.”

Excellent idea, far better to invite drivers to attend than to conscript them, at high cost, using speed cameras. Cut out the middleman!

Please make cycle safety an important point in the training. Also to “never text and drive”. Thank you.
