A sign of things to come

The Highways Agency (HA) is introducing pictograms onto some of its overhead electronic signs, in a bid to make roads safer (Surveyor, 16/07/09).

Displays on around 20 signs on the M23 in Surrey will show pictures as well as words. The HA said the designs – based on familiar road signs for accidents, queues, snow and ice, high winds and skid risk – are easy for drivers to read and react to.

Derek Turner, the HA’s network operations director, said: “The programme is being rolled out across the country during the year.”
