The ‘young people’ session at the 2013 National Road Safety Conference will include a presentation looking at Northern Ireland’s ground breaking approach to improving young driver safety.

More than 120 people have already registered to attend the conference which will take place in Harrogate, 13-14 November. Road Safety GB Yorkshire and Humberside Region is hosting the event and Colas and AA DriveTech have both renewed their sponsorship.

Iain Greenway’s presentation will outline a new approach which is expected to be rolled out across Northern Ireland in 2014. It will include changes to the age at which drivers can learn to drive and take their test; new rules relating to passengers; and amendments to the new driver regime including a new ‘R’ plate and a 45mph restriction for newly qualified drivers.

The reforms are part of a broader suite of work to drive down road casualties in Northern Ireland. This includes the mutual recognition of penalty points between Ireland and Northern Ireland, strengthening drink driving laws and hard hitting advertising campaigns.

Iain Greenway is director of the Road Safety & Vehicle Regulation Division in the Department of the Environment (Northern Ireland) and oversees policy development in areas including drink driving; driver training; taxi, goods vehicles and bus operator licensing; and vehicle testing.

He is a chartered surveyor, a Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors and the Irish Institution of Surveyors and a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
