Ian Burrell (kneeling in pic), pioneer of the CRASH card scheme, has been awarded an MBE for services to motorcycle safety.
Ian Burrell is a paramedic with the East of England Ambulance Service based in Southend, Essex. He is also the chairman of the Ambulance Motorcycle Club UK.
He has been awarded an MBE for services to motorcycle safety, particularly through the CRASH card scheme which he and the Ambulance Motorcycle Club pioneered in 2009.
The small card, placed inside the crash helmet, has space on one side for a motorcyclist to write some basic details, with a mnemonic (CRASH) on the other which prompts them to give helpful answers if they have come off their bike and need to call 999.
A sticker is also placed on the outside of the crash helmet to alert an ambulance crew to the fact a possibly unconscious rider has a card.
There are now 500,000 CRASH cards in use worldwide.

You seem to have missed the point on the card information the green dot and Do Not Remove Helmet sticker which has been designed by paramedics who attend collisions to assist them and medical staff. The card also enables the engagement with riders on safety issues. I think we already had this “negative” conversation a while back.

The information which can be placed on this card is minimal, one would have to create one’s own leaflet to fit in anything of value. It won’t be needed by paramedics as they have a job to do to save a life and by the time one has got to hospital most of the worst is over in terms of that action taken. The dot could be scratched off the helmet, leaving those on the scene no better off.
Some have added DO NOT REMOVE HELMET and that could work against the wearer, as it’s like making a living will and going against the wishes of the wearer. If unconscious cannot be persuaded otherwise, one could be subject to a liability claim. Therefore important emergency treatment may be delayed.
