DfT plans new illegal substances offence

09.03 | 15 May 2009 |

A report in the Telegraph last week picked up on the fact that the DfT is drawing up plans to create a new offence of driving under the influence of illegal substances.

The DfT has signalled its intention to create the new offence in its consultation on road safety beyond 2010.

The change in the law would mean that any driver can be prosecuted for getting behind the wheel with any illegal drug in their bloodstream, and would bring Britain into line with other countries including Italy, Romania, Croatia and Australia.

It follows increasing concern about the problem of drug driving and its impact on road safety.
