FirstCar has launched a new awards scheme for road safety professionals, to recognize their work in seeking to reduce casualties among young drivers.

The inaugural FirstCar Young Driver Road Safety Awards will be presented at the Young Driver Focus 2015 event in London on 15 April. The closing date for entries to the awards is 20 February 2015.

James Evans, publisher of FirstCar, said: “Despite several years of tight financial constraints and very limited resources, road safety professionals remain as passionate and committed as ever in their determination to deliver interventions to reduce crashes and casualties.

“There is some great work being carried out locally, regionally and nationally and we are keen to give that work the recognition it deserves.

“That’s why we’re launching the FirstCar Young Driver Road Safety Awards which we hope will become an annual event. This year there are three awards up for grabs, but we hope to extend this going forward.”

The awards categories for 2015 are:

Education and training initiative of the year: for standout education programmes or training schemes that successfully engage learner and newly qualified drivers to improve their attitude and skills. The judges are looking for innovative, sustainable, evaluation-lead initiatives, which make use of different media and extended learning.

Partnership scheme of the year: for outstanding examples of engagement from partners within the public and/or private sector to further young driver road safety. More than the initiative itself, the judges will be looking at how the partnership worked to leverage the key strengths of each partner, and how the initiative benefited from a partnership approach.

Young driver campaign of the year: whether it’s a big-budget national campaign, or a local one run on a shoestring, campaigns will be judged on their effectiveness, creativity and scalability. In addition to the campaign message itself, the judges will be looking for best use of media (print, digital, radio, video, etc.) and how the campaign was evaluated.
