Lancashire County Council is hosting a free webinar for professionals working to support older road users to remain safe, active and independent for longer.

‘Fit to Drive? How do we keep our older road users safe on the road as professionals?’ will take place online on Wednesday 16 September 2026, from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

The event will examine the challenges faced by older drivers and the role that professionals can play in helping them remain safe on the road, as the UK’s population continues to age.

The webinar is aimed at medical professionals, road safety practitioners, public health professionals and emergency services, and will cover the factors that can affect driving ability as people get older.

Topics will include:

  • How eyesight, health and medication can affect driving.
  • The latest road safety updates relating to older drivers.
  • How professionals and agencies can work together to support safer journeys.

Speakers include Dr Sakthi Karunanithi, director of public health and wellbeing at Lancashire County Council; Ruth Purdie OBE, chief executive of UKROEd and The Road Safety Trust; Rob Heard MBE, road safety consultant; DS Helen Parkinson of Lancashire Constabulary; and Deborah Hall and Alison Hankinson from Lancashire County Council.

The session will provide an opportunity for professionals from different sectors to share knowledge and consider how they can work together to support older people to continue travelling safely and independently.
