Parents, teachers and other school staff from across South Lanarkshire have participated in a training course for cycle instructors, organised by Cycling Scotland as part of Bikeability Scotland.
Bikeability Scotland forms part of the Scottish Government’s Cycle Action Plan for Scotland (CAPS) and aligns to the National Standard for Cycle Training developed on behalf of the DfT. Cycling Scotland has responsibility for the administration and development of the programme across Scotland.
The training course for instructors was held at Chatelherault Country Park in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, with nearby residential streets also used to practice on and off road manoeuvres.
The skills learned by the teachers, staff and volunteers will allow them to deliver Bikeability training to the pupils at primary schools across South Lanarkshire. Representatives from South Lanarkshire Council, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Cycling Scotland also participated in the training.
Councillor Graham Simpson, chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s road safety forum, said: “This type of training is essential as it is the parents, staff and teachers who will ultimately be teaching the children how to cycle safely on and off road.
“Knowing the correct manoeuvres and procedures will help them become better cyclists, improve how safe they are on the road and enable them to pass this knowledge on.”
