A new international video competition has been launched with the aim of increasing awareness of road safety in younger drivers.
‘Young Videomakers for Road Safety’ has been launched by the World Road Association PIARC* (Italy branch) and ANAS, the Italian National Road and Motorways Agency.
The competition is open to young people aged 14-20 years and looks to tackle the main causes of distraction: the use of mobile phones, devices in the car (radio, navigation system etc), smoking, music and the presence of other people who distract the driver.
The videos must be no longer than three minutes and can also cover seat belts, speeding and the use of drugs and alcohol.
In the UK, statistics show that young newly qualified drivers are disproportionately represented in road casualties. During 2014, 17-24 year olds comprised 19% of fatal road casualties, despite only accounting for 7% of full licence holders.
Video can be submitted via the Think Drive website, and the winning entries will be selected by a judging panel from those with the most views on YouTube.
