The Labour peer who was jailed after admitting sending text messages as he drove says he wants to help other motorists learn from his mistake.
Lord Ahmed was jailed after admitting dangerous driving for engaging in an exchange of text messages with a journalist as he drove down the M1 in West Yorkshire on Christmas Day 2007. Minutes after texting he was involved in an unrelated fatal accident.
Lord Ahmed was released from Moorland Prison after the Court of Appeal agreed to suspend his 12-week sentence. He said: "Whilst it has been a terrible ordeal and terrible experience, I think there are certain aspects which can be made into positives in relation to my own experiences and the mistake I made.”
David Frost, LARSOA press officer said: “Driving requires 100% concentration and any distraction can have potentially fatal results.
“It is sad that only too often road users realise that the errors they make can contribute to tragic events resulting in the loss of life. Very often, it is only after the event that they realise the damage caused by their own behaviour, to the family, friends and colleagues of those innocent victims who are killed as a result of such distractions.”
