Two more videos will be released this month as part of a young driver campaign that deploys humour to deliver a serious message.

The films will be the fifth and sixth to be released as part of the ‘Not If I’m Driving’ campaign from Central Bedfordshire & Luton Councils’ road safety teams. The campaign, which has been running since October 2013, highlights the issues affecting young drivers and their passengers.

The six films, created by Road Safety Analysis for the two councils, cover the issue of distractions including peer pressure, inappropriate speed and calling or texting when driving.

In the three-year period 2010-12, young passengers and young drivers accounted for 49% and 31% respectively, of all road casualties in the Bedfordshire and Luton areas.

Michelle Watkins, senior road safety officer for Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “We wanted to create a campaign about the risks which would appeal to our target audience.

“Each video reveals an important message but is delivered in a humorous way and we hope that by going down this route instead of using shock tactics, young people will be more engaged and likely to share the videos among their friends on social networking sites.”

The videos were released in sets of two during October and December 2013. The fifth film was released on 7 March and the final film in the series will be released on 21 March 2014.

The films are published on Youtube and supported by Facebook.
