Motorcycling safety conference: speaker line up complete

The National Fire Chiefs Council and National Police Chiefs Council are both represented on the agenda of a conference focusing on rider safety to be held early next year.

The one-day conference, hosted by Road Safety GB, will be held at the National Motorcycle Museum, located close to the NEC near Birmingham, on Thursday 13 February 2025.

Delegate fees are £110 for Road Safety GB members and £160 for non-members, both plus VAT.

The conference will set out to showcase new safety initiatives and campaigns within the sector, and discuss the challenging issue of how riders fit into the Safe System.

National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) will be represented by Deputy Chief Constable Simon Blatchly OBE, Derbyshire Constabulary & NPCC Motorcycle Lead. While the detail of Simon’s presentation is to follow, it is likely to include an update on BikeSafe and other NPCC campaigns and initiatives aimed at improving rider safety.

There are three other police officers on the agenda, as follows:

  • Ian Harvey, Motorcycle Casualty Reduction Officer, Devon & Cornwall Police
    Presentation: Bespoke Hazard Perception Simulator Programme
  • PC Steve Bucksey, Motorcycle KSI Reduction Officer – Surrey & Sussex Police
    Presentation: Vital Elements of Motorcycle Engagement

National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) will be represented by Billy Fenwick MIFireE, Area Manager – Head of Prevention, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service & Thematic Lead for Motorcycle and Powered Two Wheelers, National Fire Chiefs Council. Billy will outline the Fire Sector’s ambitions for reducing risk for motorcyclists.

A second speaker from the Fire Sector – Claire Harris from Kent Fire & Rescue Service – will update attendees with regard to plans for the Biker Down! Initiative.

The conference will also provide networking opportunities for road safety professionals with an interest in motorcyclists and bring local authorities and the private and third sectors closer together.
