Redcar & Cleveland’s road safety unit has launched a pilot scheme offering free advice and guidance to motorists on a range of safe driving issues.
The first session, ‘2 Minute Check Prevents A Wreck’, was held last week at a local ASDA store, with monthly sessions planned around the borough’s car parks.
The idea came after disappointing results from the road safety team’s free winter checks on more than 200 vehicles – 90% did not have any water for windscreen washers, 40% had problems with their tyres and 20% had defective lights.
Councillor Mary Lanigan said: "This is about trying to make the public more aware of the importance of road safety – and how easy it is to check their vehicle on a daily basis.
"These checks will ultimately help reduce crashes and casualties – we’ll be checking their vehicles for problems and giving advice on how to correct them."
Everyone who takes part will be given a checklist along with a free copy of the new Highway Code, a tyre depth check and an emergency waistcoat.
