The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) is hosting a one-day seminar that will look at how to improve physical activity in children without increasing the number of road safety-related fatalities and injuries.
The seminar, ‘Safe, Green and Active’, will bring together stakeholders in public health, road safety, highways engineering and services for children and families. It takes place on 27 March in London and the delegate fee is £60.
It will offer delegates the opportunity to consider how to encourage more active lifestyles and active travel for children and young people; support change to more sustainable forms of transport, particularly walking and cycling; reduce deaths and serious accidental injuries to children on our roads; and tackle health inequalities resulting from childhood accidents.
While promoting the benefits of physically active children, CAPT also recognises the risks. Around 60 children and young people under 16 die on Great Britain’s roads each year and 2,350 are seriously injured, and there was an 8% rise in the number of children killed or seriously injured in the third quarter of 2012. CAPT says that some experts put this down to children outdoors emulating their sporting heroes from the Olympics.
The seminar will include presentations on policy developments, case studies, networking, and peer-to-peer discussions facilitated by experts from CAPT.
