A new driver refresher day for older drivers has been developed and launched by Road Safety Analysis, in partnership with West Berkshire Council and Safer Roads Bekshire.

The inaugural "Flourish" event, which provides information and advice to help maintain driving independence, was held in Newbury on 6 September. Those supporting the event on the day included local pharmacists, opticians, mobility and exercise consultants, and an occupational therapist. A series of talks by experts took place continuously throughout the day.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) was also in attendance to give older motorists advice about its advanced driving programme, DriveCheck55.

Cheryl Evans, senior road safety officer for West Berkshire Council, said: “Research and evidence suggests as we get older, factors affecting health and mobility in later life mean we also face challenges to staying safe on the roads.

"Flourish aims to bring all of these factors into a dedicated campaign which supports active engagement with drivers through community events and working with health and road safety professionals."

Mark Trimmer, regional operations manager for IAM said:“DriveCheck 55 has been developed with the older driver in mind, and addresses the issues that they may face.

"It offers an opportunity to have a relaxed and informed session with an IAM examiner who can support some best practice driving procedures and discuss any driving issues, which may make them feel uncomfortable.”
