Police forces across the UK are gearing up for a four week road safety campaign, with a particular focus on criminal use of roads.
Operation Spotlight is organised by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) and runs between 1-28 April.
The NPCC co-ordinates a number of operations throughout the year, receiving widespread support from police forces across the country. This four week initiative centres on the Fatal Four causes of road collisions, with a particular focus on criminal use of the roads.
Surrey RoadSafe is among those participating. It is launching a #Fatal5 campaign to educate and engage with road users about the importance of knowing the top five offences endangering road users today:
- Excessive and inappropriate speed
- Distracted driving
- Drink and drug driving
- Failing to wear a seatbelt
- Careless and inconsiderate driving
Tactics deployed throughout this campaign are mostly web-based to allow for ease of sharing amongst its audiences, however there will also be some additional print-resources produced in line with key messages and themes.
Surrey RoadSafe will also be conducting targeted police enforcement throughout the campaign, to help keep Surrey’s roads safe and reinforce the message to the public that committing these offences has serious consequences.
Further north, Durham Constabulary says the aim of the campaign is to “protect communities by disrupting criminal activity on the UK road network and reducing the number of people who are killed and seriously injured”.
It adds that “this work is our bread and butter, but if you’re thinking of using our road network to carry out criminal activity, we will be coming for you”.
