The latest confirmed presentation at the 2014 National Road Safety Conference will discuss how road safety and casualty reduction will be delivered in the future.
The presentation will be delivered by Simon D’Vali, principal engineer for the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council.
In his presentation, The Future of Road Safety and Casualty Reduction in the UK, Simon will look at the present and possible future state of road safety and casualty reduction in terms of finance, casualty levels, best practice and sustainability.
Simon D’Vali has 21 years’ experience in road safety and casualty reduction and is currently a principal engineer for Bradford Council, managing new build and maintenance for the North of the district.
Simon is lead officer for the council on traffic matters such as policy and legislation and managed the Neighbourhood Road Safety Initiative in Bradford (NRSI), a specific Government funded project to readdress the imbalance of child KSIs in deprived areas. Simon also provided evidence at the Transport Select Committee on the DfT’s Strategic Framework for Road Safety.
He has also been instrumental in the development of a working relationship between Public Health and Highways for both Bradford and West Yorkshire, and is technical lead for the development of the Safer Roads element of the West Yorkshire Local Transport Plan.
Simon chairs the West Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership, the West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership and Core Cities (the interface for road safety matters between DfT and metropolitan districts across the UK). He is also a member of PACTS (Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety).
National Road Safety Conference
The 2014 National Road Safety Conference is being hosted by Road Safety GB South East region at The Grand in Brighton, 25-26 November. The event is co-sponsored by Colas and AA DriveTech.

There appears to be an increasing recognition of the wider aspects of motorised vehicle use and its consequences for public health. The effects of pollution (respiratory), inactivity (CVD), isolation (mental) and noise (stress) all outnumber the direct casualties on the roads several times over.
Whilst many have lamented the passing of traffic authority road safety targets based on KSIs the unshackling of road safety activity from this “Iceberg tip” of motor use consequences may provide far greater opportunities for the respective skills, expertise and experience of road safety and public health professionals to be combined for a far greater benefit in overall public well being.
