Nine primary schoolchildren in West Oxfordshire have each received a new bike after submitting winning designs in a poster competition to highlight road safety.
The West Oxfordshire Community Safety Partnership launched the competition in primary schools in the district to raise awareness of road safety issues during the darker winter months. Pupils were asked to design an A4 poster highlighting an issue of their choice ranging from speeding and bad parking near schools to cycling without lights or not wearing a seatbelt.
Councillor Norman MacRae MBE, chairman of West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “It’s important that children are educated about road safety from a young age so a poster competition was a great way to engage with them.
“I was impressed with all of the entries and it was difficult to choose the winners. We have some very talented young artists in West Oxfordshire."
The nine winners were aged from six to 11 years and the winning designs are being displayed in schools and local communities.
What a great initiative – engaging with young people by channelling their creativity to broaden their awareness of road safety issues. Have fun and learn at the same time, that’s the way to do it.
