Road Safety GB has welcomed the appointment of Justin Madders MP as the DfT’s new roads minister, a remit that includes responsibility for road safety, automated vehicles, micromobility and motoring agencies.
Mr Madders succeeds Lilian Greenwood MP, who has moved to the Department for Work and Pensions after serving as the Minister for Future of Roads.
During her time at the DfT, Ms Greenwood oversaw the publication of the Government’s new Road Safety Strategy, alongside work on local roads, road maintenance, automated vehicles and other key transport priorities.
Ms Greenwood also delivered presentations at several Road Safety GB conferences, including the National Road Safety Conference and the Mature Drivers’ Event in Birmingham earlier this year.
Road Safety GB Chair Nicola Foster paid tribute to Ms Greenwood’s contribution to road safety.

“Her enthusiasm, commitment and genuine passion for improving road safety have been evident throughout her tenure, and securing the publication of the Road Safety Strategy is a landmark achievement that will help shape the future of road safety across the UK.
“I would like to thank Lilian personally for her unwavering support of Road Safety GB and for the generosity she has shown with her time, particularly by joining us as a keynote speaker at our National Road Safety Conference.”
Mr Madders has been the Labour MP for Ellesmere Port and Bromborough (previously Ellesmere Port and Neston) since 2015. A solicitor specialising in employment law before entering Parliament, he previously served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Business and Trade and has held a number of shadow ministerial roles covering business, employment rights and health.
He has also chaired the All-Party Parliamentary Motor Group, giving him experience of issues affecting road users, the automotive sector and the future of road transport.

The appointment comes at an important time for the road safety sector, with the publication of the Road Safety Strategy providing a renewed framework for reducing deaths and serious injuries on the UK’s roads.
Road Safety GB looks forward to engaging with the new minister and continuing to work constructively with the DfT and partners across the sector to help deliver the strategy’s ambitions.
