Road safety professionals are being invited to participate in a new consultation, designed to help the Road Safety Trust identify its priorities for the next decade.
The Road Safety Trust is registered charity which supports projects and research aimed at making the UK roads safer for all road users.
Projects that have benefited from the funding include:
- A new virtual reality app designed to teach children about road safety which is being developed by researchers at the University of South Wales (grant of £67,500)
- A pilot scheme to reduce tailgating by people driving at work, led by a team at TRL (grant of £98,000)
- An app to reinforce road safety messages developed by a team led by Warwickshire and West Mercia Road Safety Partnership (grant of £35,000)
- Development of a DVD training guide by researchers at Nottingham Trent University to improve safety for novice users of mobility scooters (grant of £98,604)
- Funding provided to PACTS to help improve the information base for road-related suicides (grant of £15,500)
However, the charity says it has identified some gaps in its work and research – and as a result would like to get a range of views from within the road safety sector to help it select areas of priority for the next 5-10 years.
The online consultation, which closes on 31 October, takes about 5-10 minutes to complete and asks participants to rate each of the identified topics by importance – and add any others that should be considered.
Jeremy Phillips, Road Safety GB’s director of research, said: “Road Safety GB welcomes this engagement by the Road Safety Trust with casualty reduction practitioners.
“The ambition for road safety to be a truly evidence-led profession doesn’t just mean that we and our members commit to working to the best available evidence base for all our work.
“It also means that researchers and research sponsors need to be responsive to plugging the evidence gaps identified by front line colleagues and providing the specific insights for which practitioners are asking.
“We encourage all our members to respond to this survey and in so doing help to influence one of the principal enablers of road safety research in the UK.”
