Liverpool City Council is urging drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to take extra care as the clocks go back and darker evenings increase risks on the roads.
The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, coinciding with the start of half-term across the city. The period also includes Halloween celebrations on the following Sunday and Bonfire Night a few days later.
The Council says road safety risks increase significantly around the clock change, as the sudden shift in lighting conditions can catch road users off guard, particularly during the first few days.
It is reminding people that visibility is crucial during darker mornings and evenings, with drivers having a particular responsibility to look out for more vulnerable road users, including people walking to school, cycling to work or jogging.
Drivers are being advised to slow down, use dipped headlights in urban areas to avoid dazzling others, and take extra care near schools and pedestrian crossings, particularly during peak travel times.
Pedestrians are encouraged to wear bright or fluorescent clothing during the day and reflective materials at night. The Council says reflective armbands, sashes, jackets and footwear can be seen by drivers using headlights up to three times further away than non-reflective materials.
Reflective tape and fluorescent glow sticks can also be incorporated into Halloween costumes. Other advice includes walking facing traffic where there is no pavement, avoiding distractions such as phones and headphones when near or crossing roads, and holding children’s hands while keeping them on the inside of the path, away from traffic.
Cyclists are being reminded to use front and rear lights in darkness or poor visibility, wear reflective and fluorescent clothing, ensure their bikes have reflectors, particularly on pedals and wheels, and ride predictably while signalling clearly.
Liverpool City Council is working with Merseyside Police, Merseyside Road Safety Partnership and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service to promote the safety messages.
A public road safety event will take place outside Primark on Church Street on 29 October, from 10am to 3pm. Visitors will be able to take part in activities and learn more about staying safe on the roads.
Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, said: “As the clocks go back and evenings get darker, we’re urging everyone to take extra care on our roads. Whether you’re walking, cycling, or driving, being visible is absolutely vital.
“With Halloween celebrations adding to the mix, it’s more important than ever to wear bright or reflective clothing and stay alert.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility and small actions, like using bike lights or holding a child’s hand, can make a big difference. Together we can keep our streets safe for everyone.”
