The Road Safety GB Academy has launched a new e-learning course for transport professionals who want to gain a greater understanding of driver fatigue.
The content for the CPD certified Fatigue Management in Transportation course has been created by experts from Loughborough University.
There are three core modules for all transport professionals who want to learn more about managing fatigue, plus a fourth optional module for fatigue management leads or those implementing a fatigue risk management system (FRMS).
The course demonstrates why fatigue management is a priority for anyone involved in road transport, it explains the scientific principles for effective fatigue management and gives a range of tools to use to tailor interventions to the needs of various organisations.
Completion of modules 1-3 enables the learner to:
- Understand how and why driver fatigue occurs, who is affected and what the costs and consequences are
- Understand what fatigue and sleepiness are, how to recognise them and how they affect performance
- Recognise the limitations of a prescriptive approach to fatigue management
- Understand what the rules and regulations are for organisations in relation to fatigue management
Completion of the optional module 4 prepares the learner to:
- Approach fatigue management in a systematic way
- Use a fatigue management toolbox with interventions which can be tailored to the needs of any organisation
The course is an online, self-directed learning course that will allow learners to work through the material at their own pace.
To celebrate the launch, the first five individuals to sign up will receive a free copy of the Handbook of Fatigue Management in Transportation.
The book provides an overview of current key fatigue management strategies and gives insight into future novel options to manage fatigue. It discusses the history, implementation, limitations, and proper use of biomathematical models of fatigue for fatigue risk management in transportation.
Ashleigh Filtness, professor of transport human factors and sleep science at Loughborough University, said: “Feeling tired is a daily experience for all people. Fatigue is itself not a safety concern, however, feeling fatigued while driving can have catastrophic consequences.
“Fatigue management is complex as there are multiple causes and consequences to fatigue. This online learning resource has been designed with clarity in mind. We have worked with a wide range of road safety professionals to understand user needs throughout the development.
“Fatigue management is a priority for anyone involved in road transport and through this CPD accredited course, learners will be equipped with the information and tools they need to understand and mitigate driver fatigue. We are looking forward to the resource being used and more people gaining understanding of this important and often overlooked area of road safety.”
The cost to access the full online CPD course is £50 plus VAT for Academy members and £65 plus VAT for non-members. Further details and a link to book and pay for the course can be found on the Academy website.
