Strong demand prompts RSGB Academy to add second road safety education course date

Strong demand for a new RSGB Academy course aimed at improving the delivery of road safety education has led to a second date being added to the programme.

The initial running of the Road Safety Delivery in an Educational Setting course is now fully subscribed, with a further course date announced for 8 March 2027.

The course has been developed to help road safety practitioners deliver engaging, effective and evidence-informed education in schools and other learning environments.

It explores the relationship between child development and road safety learning, helping practitioners understand how children and young people perceive risk and make decisions at different stages of their development.

Delegates will gain practical strategies for planning and delivering age-appropriate road safety sessions, using effective teaching approaches and resources, managing group dynamics and maintaining safety during practical activities.

The course also places an emphasis on creating inclusive learning environments and encourages practitioners to reflect on and evaluate their practice to maximise the impact of future interventions.

The programme is delivered by Kate Castle, Senior Road Safety Officer at Warwickshire County Council, who has extensive experience working across early years, primary and SEND settings.

A qualified teacher, Kate led the transformation of road safety education across primary schools in Warwickshire following her appointment in 2017. She has designed and implemented evidence-based interventions informed by data, research and partnership working.

The strong take-up of the course comes as the Government’s new Road Safety Strategy places renewed emphasis on education as an important part of improving road safety outcomes.

The strategy commits to supporting a lifelong learning approach, recognising that road safety education should begin in childhood and continue throughout life. It also sets out plans to publish national guidance on road safety education, training and publicity, alongside a practical manual to support delivery.

The RSGB Academy course is closely aligned with these ambitions, providing practitioners with practical knowledge and skills to deliver high-quality, evidence-informed road safety education in schools and other educational settings.
