TfL issues cycle training reminder

Transport for London (TfL) is reminding Londoners that they can get tailored cycle training, for free or a small fee, from their local boroughs.

The training is for cyclists of all ages and abilities. All cycle trainers are accredited through the Bikeability scheme and the training is designed to give people the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on London’s roads.

Ben Plowden, TfL’s director of strategy and planning, said: “A new bike is a perennial favourite Christmas present for all ages and cycle training is a gift that keeps on giving.

“We would like to see all new cyclists get involved with cycle training to equip themselves with the skills for travelling on London’s roads.

“More experienced cyclists can definitely benefit too – advanced training sessions can challenge perceptions, help shake off bad cycling habits and improve safety on the road.”

TfL says cycling in London has continued to grow rapidly and describes taking to two wheels as “a fun way for people to keep fit while getting around their local area”.

TfL is also working with British Cycling to help new cyclists gain confidence by offering guided cycle rides across London. TfL says riding with others in a group with a professional, trained leader is “fun and helps people new to cycling get the confidence they need to cycle more regularly”.

More than 200 guided rides are already planned for 2015, including a number of rides just for women.
