Young driver scheme wins prestigious national award

Young driver specialist, Young Marmalade, scooped one of the prizes in the BT Essence of the Entrepreneur competition.

Young Marmalade won the ‘Original Business Concept’ awarded by a judging panel headed by ‘Dragons’ Den’ star, Peter Jones.

Young Marmalade was developed in 2006 to help young drivers overcome the initial insurance barrier. By supplying a new or nearly new car with a high EuroNCAP safety rating, Young Marmalade says it has ‘created a safer environment for the most vulnerable sector of the driving community’.

Young Marmalade uses discounts and marketing support from manufacturers to offset the first 12 months premiums. There are now eight manufacturers directly supporting the Young Marmalade scheme: Fiat, Ford, Peugeot, Renault, SEAT, Toyota, Vauxhall, and Volkswagen.

This combination of supplying a newer car and insisting on additional driver training appears to significantly reduce the percentage of young drivers having a crash. Just under 9% of Young Marmalade drivers have been involved in a crash compared to the national average of 22% for this age group.
