Road Safety GB has launched a one-day national conference for road safety professionals, focusing on mature driver safety, with delegate registration now open.

Safe System Thinking for Mature Road Users will be held at Austin Court, Birmingham, on Tuesday 28 April 2026. The event is supported by GEM Motoring Assist, The Road Safety Trust and Waymo.

The agenda is currently under development and will consider mature road users in the context of the Safe System. Alternatives to, and retiring from, driving will also be covered on the agenda.

Among the first speakers to be confirmed for the event is Professor Charles Musselwhite, head of psychology at Aberystwyth University, who will deliver the opening keynote address.

Other presentations on the agenda include:

Evidence-based approaches to enhancing older driver safety
Dr Elizabeth Box, director, ECM Research & Tanya Fosdick, research director, Agilysis

Driving Mobility’s Strategic Role in Supporting Mature Drivers
Dr Anu Varshney, strategic director – research, education & innovation for Driving Mobility & head of service, South East DriveAbility (SED), Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust

A partnership approach to engaging with mature drivers across West Mercia
Anna Southall & Vicki Bristow, engagement & campaigns managers, West Midlands Police (both)

Empowering Mature Drivers: A Gloucestershire Community Road Safety Model
Nigel Lloyd-Jones, co-lead of the Older Drivers Forum for Gloucestershire

More information about all the presentations can be found on the event website – where delegate registration is now open.

The cost for Road Safety GB members is £195 plus VAT – with the non-member rate standing at £245 plus VAT. Click here to find out more about Road Safety GB membership.

Anyone interested in speaking at the conference can still supply a title and brief abstract/overview of their presentation, along with a brief speaker biog, by email to Nick Rawlings. With the agenda already under development, potential speakers are encouraged to do so ASAP.

There is also a tabletop exhibition which will run alongside the conference. Prices and more information can be obtained by emailing the organisers.

James Gibson, executive director of Road Safety GB, said: “The UK’s population is ageing, with the proportion of people aged 65 and over increasing year-on-year.

“As a result, the number of mature drivers is also on the rise. Government data shows there were more than 6 million people aged 70 or over with a full driving licence in the UK as of September 2024.

“That’s why Road Safety GB is delighted to be hosting this conference, bringing together road safety professionals and those committed to supporting mature drivers to maintain their independence while at the same time enhancing their safety.”
