The Road Safety Foundation is inviting children, young people, parents and carers to help shape safer and more inclusive journeys as part of a new research project funded by the Road Safety Trust.
The project aims to better understand how neurodivergent children of all ages and young people aged 16–24 experience roads and streets, including the challenges they may face when travelling to school, college, work or other destinations.
The Foundation is seeking views from neurodivergent young people themselves, as well as parents and carers of neurodivergent children and young people.
It is also looking for neurotypical young people aged 16–24 and parents or carers of neurotypical children and young people to take part, providing a comparison that will help researchers understand the experiences of neurodivergent participants.
There are two ways to get involved.
Parents, carers and young people can complete a short online survey, which takes around 10–15 minutes. The survey asks about experiences of roads and streets and the issues that can affect journeys.
- Parents/carers of a neurodivergent child or young person: complete the survey
- Neurodivergent young people aged 16–24: complete the survey
- Parents/carers of a neurotypical child or young person: complete the survey
- Neurotypical young people aged 16–24: complete the survey
Participants can also share more detailed experiences through the YEA – Youth Engagement App, available from the App Store and Google Play. The app provides an opportunity to report issues encountered during journeys and help researchers build a better picture of how children and young people experience their local roads and streets.
For participants under 13, a parent, carer or guardian will need to sign up and report on their behalf. Those aged 13–18 can sign up but will need to provide a parent, carer or guardian’s email address for approval. Participants aged over 18 can sign up and use the app themselves.
Anyone using the app should follow the project guidance and only use it when safely away from the road.
By taking part, participants can help researchers identify barriers, understand different experiences and ultimately contribute to safer, more accessible journeys for all children and young people.
