Police and road safety partners urged to support national driver eyesight campaign

Police forces, road safety partnerships and other organisations are being encouraged to support Is Your Vision Roadworthy?, the National Driver Eyesight Campaign, which will run from 26 October to 8 November 2026 as part of Operation Insight.

The annual campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of good eyesight for safe driving, encourage motorists to have regular sight tests and help police identify drivers who do not meet the legal eyesight standard.

Local authorities, road safety professionals and partner organisations are invited to support the campaign through roadside checks, awareness events, community engagement and local publicity.

How to get involved
Police forces are being encouraged to carry out 20-metre number plate eyesight tests where operationally appropriate. Checks may take place following road traffic collisions, when investigating moving traffic or careless and dangerous driving offences, and in response to reports of poor driving.

Other opportunities include situations where a driver fails to stop promptly when requested, appears not to see or comply with traffic signs, or during dedicated roadside eyesight testing operations.

Road safety partnerships and other supporting organisations can help by sharing campaign messages, organising awareness activities and distributing campaign materials through local networks.

Campaign resources available
A campaign toolkit is available online, providing resources to help organisations plan and promote their involvement.

Materials include campaign guidance, an online results return form, a template press release, social media graphics and suggested posts, posters, flyers and website content. Welsh-language graphics are also available.

The toolkit can be accessed via the Is Your Vision Roadworthy? campaign resources page, using the password IYVR26.

Organisations sharing campaign content on social media are asked to use #IsYourVisionRoadworthy.

Recording campaign results
Police forces and other participating organisations carrying out eyesight checks are asked to record and submit their results using either the supplied spreadsheet or the official online form.

All requested data must be included. Locally created spreadsheets, alternative reporting formats and submissions containing only headline totals cannot be included in the campaign analysis.

Consistent reporting will help build a national picture of the findings and provide evidence to inform future road safety activity.

The campaign website also provides access to the previous year’s report.

Support for local awareness events
Organisations seeking additional support for awareness events can explore the possibility of having an optometrist attend, potentially with mobile eyesight testing facilities.

For further information, contact Rachel Robson at Eye Health UK via rachel@visionmatters.org.uk. Rachel can liaise with local optometrists and organisations to explore the availability of support.
