Britain has fallen down the European league table on road safety, despite being on course to meet its own targets for 2010, according to an article last week in The Times.
The report says that Britain has performed poorly under a EU target to halve road deaths between 2000 and 2010. Only France, Portugal and Luxembourg are on course to achieve this, and in Britain between 2001-2007 the number of deaths fell by less than 15%.
The DfT claims that it has been easier for other countries to achieve the European target because they started from a higher base. However, the Netherlands has continued to improve road safety and is on course to achieve the European target of halving road deaths at least five years before Britain.
