South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership has joined forces with the Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust to promote safe cycling among young people.
The Helmet Watch 2010 initiative includes handing out on-the-spot prizes and providing information to young people wearing helmets.
Angela Lee, Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust chief executive, said: “Within just four weeks of launching Helmet Watch 2010 police forces around the UK have requested more than 20,000 Helmet Watch packs.”
John Scruby, casualty reduction officer for South Yorkshire, said: “Helmet Watch is a great way of rewarding young people who wear a cycle helmet.
“Head injury is one of the biggest causes of death and serious injury amongst young cyclists, and riding a bike without a helmet could mean the difference between life and death.”
