Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) has received a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for its ‘Biker Down’ training scheme.

Designed for motorcyclists of all ages and experience, the free scheme offers the chance to learn practical skills to help avoid being involved in a crash, as well as essential first-aid training and advice on what to do should a biker be first on the scene of a crash.

Biker Down was devised by KFRS’s Fire Bike team and is delivered by fire fighters alongside KFRS Emergency Life Support Instructors and Survival Skills Advanced Motorcycle Trainers. It is delivered free of charge to participants at local fire stations in small informal groups.

The Biker Down team collected its award at the PMIRSA ceremony at the Savoy Hotel in London on 11 December.

Well done. Could something like that be supported nationwide? I am sure that there are a lot of new to motorcycling that would benefit from an early intervention to perhaps change attitudes and prevent the motorcycling carnage that occurs when they get older and on bigger bikes.

Congratulations! Some of my colleagues have organised Biker Down events in Sussex and they’ve been really well received by the motorcycle community. Well deserved!
