The first speakers have been confirmed for the inaugural national Data Analysts’ Conference, as the overall agenda begins to take shape.
The conference, which takes place in London on 1 March, is being organised by Road Safety GB in partnership with Road Safety Analysis, and with support from the DfT.
The event has the theme ‘joining the dots’ and is the result of a survey conducted in 2015 which captured the views, experiences and aspirations of more than 100 analysts from across the country.
Dr Paul Hewson (left in pic) will provide “Insights from underused data sources” while Dr Daryl Lloyd will assist in “Joining Government Data to Policy”.
Dr Hewson started work as a cell biologist in Scotland before working in local government, including a spell as Devon County Council’s road safety data analyst and research officer. After retraining as a statistician, he was awarded a PhD in 2005.
Dr Hewson is a problem solver and has been involved in projects analysing high frequency financial data, mapping the Ebola epidemic and generating small area estimates for the 2011 Skills for Life Survey.
His presentation will give an overview of the process of small area estimation of exposure denominators such as physical activity, cycling amounts, and driver/passenger distances and trips. He will explore how these can be used to rethink risk and explain how the end results can be used.
Dr Daryl Lloyd has been a government analyst since 2004. He has headed the DfT’s road safety statistics team for the last three years, working on road freight, vehicle statistics, traffic statistics and housing statistics in his current and previous roles at the DfT, DCLG and the Cabinet Office.
Prior to joining the civil service Dr Lloyd was a research fellow and PhD researcher at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis in UCL. In that role he worked on topics as diverse as defining town centres using economic data for his doctoral thesis, exploring spatial distributions of surnames throughout Great Britain, and working out the most likely location for PG Wodehouse’s fictional Blandings Castle.
More speakers will be confirmed for the conference, which takes place at the Royal College of Surgeons, Lincoln’s Inn Field in central London.
There will also be a small exhibition running alongside the event.
