The 2016 Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards are now open for nominations, alongside a new set of judging criteria designed to clarify the level of evidence required to support nominations.

The changes that have been made are, in part, intended to encourage road safety officers to submit more of the right sort of projects for consideration.

Established in 1987 and managed by RoadSafe, the Prince Michael Awards recognise outstanding road safety achievement and innovation worldwide.

The awards are presented in five main categories based on the five pillars of theGlobal Plan for a Decade of Action: road safety management, safer roads, safer vehicles, safer road users, and post-crash response. Click here for details of the 2015 winners.

Ahead of this year’s awards, the organisers have completed a review of the judging criteria and published new guidance to help people prepare a nomination.

The changes to the nomination form and guidance are intended to clarify the level of research and evaluation expected in a high quality submission. They are also designed to allow a judgement to be made on schemes that vary wildly in terms of financial investment, in order that well researched and executed local projects stand as good a chance of success as projects with significant financial backing and impressive metrics.

Entries should comprise a maximum of 1,500 words and will be evaluated in the following categories: well researched, innovation, achievement, evaluation, commitment, replicability and sustainability.

Nominations should be submitted by 31 July and the successful applicants will receive their award from HRH Prince Michael of Kent at a celebratory luncheon on 13 December.
