Creative media students at Coleg Gwent in Torfaen, Wales, have spread the message that ‘Life doesn’t have a rewind button’ in an award-winning drink drive advert, produced for RoSPA.

As part of a pan-Wales competition open to students aged 11-25 years, the five students based at the college’s Pontypool Campus were given the brief of producing a presentation for an anti-drink drive campaign. Their 90-second animation was selected as Torfaen’s winning entry.

The animation sees two friends at a pub drinking a couple of bottles of beer, before leaving in the belief that one of them is fit to drive.  As the driver loses control and crashes into the pub, the closing sequence runs the central message: ‘Life doesn’t have a rewind button’.

As winners of the local heats, the group has received £200 to share and £100 for the college, which will be spent on new animation software.

Jamie Vincent, a member of the winning team, said: “We thought about how people can make silly mistakes and later they regret them but it is too late. So we decided to use this as our main concept to encourage people to make the decision to not drink and drive long before they get into the car.”

Penny Thorpe, principal road safety officer with Capita Symonds, said: “The makers of the film ‘Life Doesn’t Have a Rewind button’ have portrayed important elements about the consequences of drinking and driving: any amount of alcohol will impair your ability to control a car and once a mistake is made there can be no going back.”
