The London Road Safety Council’s annual award for excellence in road safety education, the 2015 Laurie Bunn Award, has gone to the London borough of Bexley for its practical pedestrian training scheme ‘Walkability’.
Designed for Year 3 pupils, the Walkability scheme was developed using lessons learnt in the delivery of child pedestrian training through schemes such as Kerbcraft and Stepping Out.
Adult volunteers are recruited from participating schools and trained to deliver the practical roadside training element, supported by resources produced by Bexley’s road safety team.
Walkability training has also been incorporated into Bexley’s independent travel training scheme which enables socially-disadvantaged children, SEN children and adults with learning, mobility, mental health or sensory difficulties to travel independently.
The new LRSC chairman, councillor Wendy Brice-Thompson, presented the award to Bexley’s mayor, councillor Sybil Camsey, at the LRSC AGM earlier this month.
Runners up included Bromley cycle training team, Bromley’s road safety team and Rachel Gates of Haringey Council.
