The death of a grandfather at the hands of a motorist on drugs forms the basis of a new campaign launched last week in Cheshire.

The newly formed Cheshire West and Chester and Cheshire East road safety teams unveiled the Fatal Distractions educational DVD at the College of Law.

The DVD tells the story of Ron Birch who was killed on his way  to celebrate his 58th birthday with family and friends.  His transit van was hit by a loaded cattle wagon driven by a man whose driving was impaired by drugs.

The DVD is designed to be used by teachers to explore the consequences of irresponsible driving and includes a lesson plan for students to discuss how collisions can be prevented.

The film includes a mock trial with Judge Elgan Edwards, the Recorder of Chester, held at Chester Crown Court.

Mr Birch’s widow and two sons attended the launch to lend their support to the campaign.
