A ‘kind and helpful’ SCP has been voted winner of a competition to find Hampshire’s School Crossing Patrol of the Year.

Havent’s Bob Jackson, who patrols for Bancroft Junior School, was awarded the title at the ceremony which was aptly timed to take place during Child Safety Week (21–27 June). He was nominated by parents and children from schools across Hampshire who were voting for their favourite school crossing patrol.

One particular vote of recognition was received from nine year old Katie Stewart who told judges: “Bob is good because he tells you when to cross politely. He is kind and helps you cross the road.”

In presenting the award, councillor Mel Kendal, executive member for the environment, praised Bob’s service to the community, saying: “On behalf of the county council I am delighted to bestow upon Bob the title of School Crossing Patrol 2010.

“Children’s safety is a huge responsibility and we are very grateful that we have such a dedicated army of school crossing patrols, like Bob, making sure they can cross the road safely at the beginning and end of the school day.

“These people are often unsung heroes of our community and this competition is one way of demonstrating the admiration we all have for them.”

Bob was presented with a glass trophy, a certificate marking his achievement, and a £500 gift voucher.
