The London Road Safety Council (LRSC) and the gas distribution company SGN have joined forces to improve the safety of London’s schoolchildren as they travel to and from school.
LSRC says that October is the peak month for road casualties in London due to a combination of the end of British Summer Time (BST) and changing weather with the onset of autumn.
LRSC and SGN are providing London’s road safety officers with 33,000 reflective safety shiners for distribution among schoolchildren. The lime coloured triangular reflectors are printed with the iconic London skyline and are intended to help children to be seen as they walk to and from school following the end of BST on 26 October.
Councillor Val Clark, chairman of LRSC, said: “Our members are road safety officers employed by local councils and they plan to give these reflectors away as rewards to children who walk to school so that they can do so in increased safety.”
John Morea, chief executive officer of SGN, added: “As we enter the most dangerous time of year on the roads we are delighted to be able to help so many children to be safer."
The safety shiners will be distributed to children in all 33 London boroughs through the network of road safety officers who work closely with schools.
