As part of its TRIP campaign, National Highways is encouraging drivers to check their tyres before setting off on journeys this autumn.
Tyre issues were the leading cause of breakdowns on the UK’s major roads in 2024, with more than 53,000 incidents – almost a fifth of the total incidents recorded.
Yet 55% of people surveyed by National Highways admit they don’t check tread depth before long journeys, and 48% don’t always check tyre pressure.
With more than six million illegal tyres thought to be on Britain’s roads, the consequences are significant – from wasted fuel costs of up to £1 billion each year to the far greater cost of lives lost.
In 2023 alone, more than 190 people were killed or seriously injured in tyre-related collisions.
The autumn campaign, launched in line with TyreSafe’s Tyre Safety Month, encourages drivers to make simple pre journey TRIP checks, including tyre tread, pressure and condition
The TRIP checklist is based on four key principles:
- Top–up – fuel, oil and screen wash
- Rest – take a rest break every two hours
- Inspect – check tyre pressure and tread
- Prepare – have a plan for all weather conditions
The campaign features both static and animated assets, as well as key captions. There are also one-minute video assets that show how to conduct essential vehicle checks.
National Highways says: “As the autumn weather sets in, tyre safety becomes increasingly critical. Worn, underinflated or damaged tyres are far more likely to lead to collisions or breakdowns.
“This autumn, we’re joining TyreSafe’s Tyre Safety Month to remind drivers how vehicle checks can make a big difference. Before setting off, check your tyre tread, pressure and condition. It could prevent a breakdown or a collision.”
