Campaign to shine a light on motorcycle safety

This year’s National Motorcycle Safety Week will focus on bike maintenance and PPE in the context of the cost-of-living crisis.

Organised by the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), the event takes place between 3-9 April.

Its objectives are:

• To raise awareness of risks and behaviours which can lead to motorcycle related fatal and serious injury collisions, particularly poor maintenance, and substandard PPE
• Educate and provide advice to influence positive motorcycle user behaviour and encourage all forms of enhanced rider training
• To increase delivery and attendance at Biker Down and all other motorcycle safety courses currently delivered by fire and rescue services (FRSs) and their partners
• To continue to establish Biker Down as a national brand for FRSs under the umbrella of NFCC and expand that brand to incorporate all public awareness messaging for motorcycle safety

Activities will be broken into two phases, the first of which will focus on gig-economy riders (3-6 April).

As per the overriding themes, the NFCC will be engaging with gig-economy riders to encourage motorcycle maintenance, the wearing of suitable PPE and responsible riding.

Over the weekend (7-9 April), the focus will switch to leisure riders.

The NFCC will be holding ‘Pit Stop’ days on red routes with a variety of road safety partners to deliver similar messages to weekend pleasure riders.
