Campaign urges people to report drink drivers

A campaign running in the East Midlands is encouraging people to report drink drivers using a short code SMS text service.

The campaign is being run by Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire police as part of the East Midlands Operational Support Service.

Members of the public can report a drink driver by texting the word ‘DRINK’ to 80800, along with details of the vehicle and where and when the person is or will be drinking. Police officers will use the information to stop, arrest and process the driver through the Courts.

The police stress that the system is only to be used for non-emergency cases – if a member of the public sees a drink/drug driver actually driving, they should treat it as an emergency and call 999.

John Siddle, communications manager for the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, said: “We are into the second week of he campaign and have a steady stream of text messages so far.”
