The winners of Gwent’s annual Christmas Poster Competition received their prizes at a recent ceremony in Newport, Wales.

With 598 anti drink drive posters entered in the competition, choosing the eventual winners was a challenge for the judges.

The individual winner of the junior section was Iwan White from Llanyrafon Primary, Torfaen, while the best school in this section was St Julian’s Primary in Newport, with 132 entries.

The senior section winner was Shelby Sims from Tredegar Comprehensive, Blaenau Gwent. Tredegar Comprehensive also won the best senior school category, with 31 entries.

The winners received a cheque for £100, the runners up won £50 and the school with the most entries won £50. Everyone who took part received a certificate.

Chief Supt Alun Thomas, who attended the event and presented the prizes, said: “Gwent Police is committed to raising awareness of road safety through education as well as enforcement, and this competition provides us with a great opportunity to work with local children and partner agencies to do so.

“The messages these posters convey are so important, especially at this time of year, and we hope that they will encourage people to think and drive more carefully and responsibly.”

Penny Thorpe, principal road safety officer for Capita Symonds road safety team (event organiser), said: “The depth of understanding of the consequences of drinking and driving shown by the pupils in their posters is outstanding. Thanks must go to their teachers who have helped focus their efforts.”
