A collaborative effort is being made to encourage people in Liverpool to choose cycling for their commute to work.

Cycling UK is working in partnership with charity Living Streets and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority to raise awareness of the benefits of cycling and highlight the opportunities available to employers through the Big Bike Revival programme.

The Big Bike programme delivers free events, which enable people to start cycling, including:

  • ‘Dr Bike’ maintenance events at workplaces
  • Commuter webinars to build confidence and teach essential skills
  • Bike maintenance courses

Cycling UK is also encouraging businesses across Liverpool to sign up to its Cycle Friendly Employer accreditation scheme, which aims to help them implement a ‘thriving culture’ for cycling.

Stewart Walsh, Cycling UK’s cycling development officer for the Liverpool City region, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for workplaces across the region to encourage employees to experience the benefits of active travel.”

The project in Liverpool also promotes ‘Walk Champion Training’ for employees, delivered by Living Streets.

Nina Cara-Collins, project manager at Living Streets, said: “Our online training provides staff with skills and knowledge to lead on promoting and advising colleagues on fitting more walking into their working day and delivering led walks.

“We believe the best way to establish and maintain healthy habits amongst staff is having ‘walk champions’ to encourage colleagues to walk in and around the working day, whether that’s to and from the office or while working from home.”
