The 2009 Gwent road safety Christmas poster competition attracted 591 entries from 27 schools from across the county.

Penny Thorpe, principal RSO for Capita Symonds road safety team, said: “The depth of understanding of the consequences of drinking and driving shown by the pupils in their posters is outstanding. Thanks must go to their teachers who have helped focus their efforts.”

The winners received their awards at a recent ceremony at County Hall Cwmbran.

Superintendent Nigel Russell, who presented the prizes and certificates, said: “In the recent summer anti drink and drugs campaign 40% of drivers who tested positive were under 25 years of age.

“The young people here can help show their friends and families how drinking and then driving can wreck lives. They are the future motoring public of this country and their support in this initiative is invaluable.”

The winners and runners up received a cheque for £100 and £50 respectively and the school with the most entries also won £50.
